HANDS ON AND GIVEAWAY: THE TILE
A little bit ago we did a write-up on the Tile App ($25) and it was a big hit. Well we just got one in our little hands this article will review our experience with this little device.
To get started lets review exactly what the Tile is. It’s a small 1 3/8″, well tile, that you can attach to personal items to track them if they get lost. You can either clip Tile through a key ring or use the provided adhesive. Simple enough.
Getting started is simple as well. Just attach the Tile to whatever you’re tracking and download the app to your Apple or Android device via their Tile App url.
Once the App is installed you create an account using an email, and add the tile by pressing the ‘e’ on the Tile and placing it on your device.
Once you’re connected you can add a picture to identify your Tile, and you’re good to go.
I ran a quick test by having my daughter hide the Tile in the house. The App immediately noticed that it was in range and I could hear the tile making a notification sound even though It was a level below me. I was surprised at how loud the actual sound was. The fact I can hear it through the entire house is a definite bonus.
So this got me thinking of all the things I’ve lost over the years that I could have easily found again if only I’d had a tile.
A TILE FOR LUCY
Lets start off with my little Lucy. She’s cute as a button, but no fence can contain her. We live right by a stream so when she gets on the other side of the fence she’s in heaven. She loves chasing little critters and when she’s done she inevitably ends up under the deck or the front porch. Every year, like clockwork, I spend hours trying to find this little knucklehead. She’s never far from home, but finding her exact location takes time. If she had a tile finding here would be a piece of cake.
TRASHED IPHONE
Last year, I’m not exactly sure, but I think I threw my phone away at the movie theater. No seriously, I think I threw it away. The battery had died, so I had no way of tracking it once I got home. If I had the Tile, it would’ve told me its last location, and when I went back to the theater to look, it would have told me if it was in one of the garbages near by. Oh well, lesson learned.
DRIVEAWAY WALLET
How about my wallet. A few years ago, I turned my car in on lease. Right before I did I had to cancel all my credit cards and get a new ID because I lost my wallet. About a month letter I received a package in the mail from the dealership with my wallet and a note explaining, they found it in the crevice between the seat and the center console. If only I had the Tile I could have done a ‘Find’, easily located it and save myself a ton of hassle.
BACKPACK LOST AT AIRPORT
And lastly, my backpack. It basically holds everything (non living things) I hold dear. Especially when I’m travelling. Items I pack include my laptop, keys, wallet, iPad, iPhone, Beats, journal, you name it it’s in there. Just this year on a trip to Punta Cana we got a quick bite to eat before the flight and I left the bag under the table. Once I realized what was going on the flight was starting to board. I found it pretty quickly, but I made a couple of other stops (gift shop, bathroom) before finding it at the restaurant. The Tile would have significantly reduced my stress and gotten my back to the flight much faster.
Needless to say, after showing the Tile to my wife, she thinks I should probably attach it to my head. Thanks hun.
