The New Balance XC-72 Lunar New Year ($130) is a crazy experimental shoe inspired by some classic DNA. Not from other sneakers but by concept cars from the 1970s. The first thing you notice is the wrap-around sole with its three distinctive traction patterns. Because it’s part of the New Year collection, ushering in the Year of the Tiger, it features a mix of neutral earth tones and tiger stripe graphics. The nylon and mesh upper is overlaid with a hairy suede, with a hint of a tiger stripe pattern on the toe and heel.
