Back in November the Helsinki-based company, Solu met it’s crowd funding campaign for its micro-computing platform. Going by the same name as the company, Solu is a small collaborative computer with a cloud-based OS and a revolutionary UI. Solu ($379) takes the concepts of cloud-based computers, mobile computing, and seamless collaboration, and rolls them all into a small wood wrapped package that contains all your processing, an edge-to-edge screen, and a powerful battery.

EVERYTHING IS IN THE CLOUD

Because Solo is completely cloud-based, you never have to worry about hard drive space, creating backups or installing software. All of your data, device status, and application settings are updated automatically. And even though it’s cloud-based you can take it offline, do your work, and as soon as you’re back on, your data is synced to the cloud. If you lose your Solu, or it breaks – no sweat. Just order a new device and when you log bac into your account, you’re right where you left off.

REVOLUTIONARY NEW UI

The OS works through utilizing cells. These cells are a combination of content and application code. Just zoom in on a cell and start working or zoom out to switch projects. Clusters of cells can be created to create projects or social groups. Collaborating with others is as easy as adding a person to a cell.
If you need additional functionality, don’t worry about downloading and paying for apps. Just go to the Solu library and choose what you need to do. Developers make their money directly from the company based on how popular their apps become. Bonus plan – Solu is also compatible with Android Apps.
You can still order a Solu through their IndieGoGo campaign. They also have an all wood keyboard you can purchase as well. One thing to keep in mind – the storage and access to the app library costs about $20/month.
