GUTS AND GLORY

Written by Lee King

Bob Costas wrote that if you are sports fan then you are an admirer of Neil Leifer. The reason for this being that for over 5 decades we have been seeing the pictures taken by Leifer and had our impressions, and our memories, shaped by them. It was way back in 1958 that journalist Leifer captured the moment that is still his most famous picture to day. Alan Ameche got the sudden death touchdown to win the championship game against the NY Giants. It was also Leifer’s 16th birthday. This game, hailed as the greatest ever, is hailed as the one that brought football to prominence and changed it from one with half empty stadiums to sell outs. Guts And Glory ($33) is a wonderful tribute to this beautiful game by the best man for the job.
