MAYWEATHER VS PACQUIAO: GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS

Written by Lee King

If you want to see Floyd Mayweather VS Manny Pacquiao Live, it looks like you’re S#$t out of luck. The tickets to the event on May 2nd at the MGM Grand sold out in under 60 seconds. The fight had been set since February but the tickets had just gone on sale due to issues with finalizing the contract. Bob Arum believed he was getting played, and wouldn’t sign until the contract read the way he believed the deal was negotiated. As Darren Rovell, first reported they are looking to generate $74 million in gates sales, with a total take of over $400 million.
Part of me is thinking that the delay in the finalization of the contract was intentional. It allowed them to gauge interest and adjust ticket pricing accordingly. Originally Mayweather Promotions wanted the gate at $40 million, but after interested peaked they raised tickets to $50 million, after the contract delay ticket prices finally settled at a $74 million take. Now the kick is that the vast majority of those tickets never actually hit the market; fighters, promoters, Showtime, HBO, and the MGM grand all got tickets for their people, whales, or whomever.
So how much are they actually going to make?  Lets take a look at pay-per-tv. The record is held by Floyd when he fought Oscar De La Hoya. That event sold 2.4 million PPV’s. This fight is expected to sell 3 million with a take of $300 million+. This doesn’t even include foreign rights and sponsors.
Now after all the bills are paid Floyd’s side will get 60 percent and Pacquiao’s side will get the rest.
Arum said, “On Monday morning, I will hand Manny a check for $50 million as a down payment, guaranteed,”
Now since Mayweather owns his promotion company his Chief Executive Officer, Leonard Ellerbe said, ” Mayweather will receive a substantial portion of his earnings immediately after the fight, and I will tell you this, Floyd Mayweather’s check will be a lot more than $50 million.”
The only line I can think of at this moment is, “It’s good to be the King.”
